The 1's and 2's

Some of you maybe aware of my friend Joe Kennedy's earlier project, "Drugs: the movie, the movie". Well he's started a new project with his bandmate Dave and new guy Rich called the 1's and 2's. They've been doing really well and won a competition to open for B.O.B (whos isnt very good, but it's still cool to see your friend open for a national ass act). They've been gaining momentum now and they did a interview with local rapper A-Jaxx for his local hip hop blog thing. I was around in the WPTS studios to take some pictures of the interview.

If you're into super fresh beats (seriously, for all you FlyLo/Dabyre beat freak fans this stuff is crack), Dave spins some magic for Joe and Rich to destroy wannabe Taylor Gang kids to (my brain might explode if I hear "Black and Yellow" one more time). These beautiful yellows are all I want.

A while a ago, I tried an experiment in Redscale film. I locked myself in the closet, pulled out a roll of expired kodak 100, cut it, reversed it, taped it back in and wound the film back into the canister. I shot the film with the light meter set at 25 asa, not 100.

Besides the one picture of joe below, I dont really know how the rest of the roll turned out. See, the person at the drugstore where I got this developed was completely befuddled by this film and didnt scan it straight, it seems. Like the picture below all the pictures are segmented, scanned in half frames. This was the only picture usable out of the whole lot. I'm going to have to scan these in my self to get all the pictures out of the roll, and I dont have a film scanner. So, uh, its going to be a while.

Here are some pictures of my friends Drugs: Themoviethemovie. They wanted a few pictures to use and I suggested that I come along for one of their practice sessions so I could take some candid pictures of them, while they perform. I hate (and suck) at making people comfortable in posed situations so this worked well for me. I shot a bunch of film and a bunch of digital pictures and I've upload some for your viewing pleasure(hopefully).

I came up with the fairy light idea after getting pleasing results from the crane in this post. Does it come off as campy?

Jon has been getting into film lately and these shots are from his new project. Im not going to give anything away except it's about Jeff's (blue track jacket) birthday, and a little story about people surprising him with a cake.

It is actually Jeff's birthday today, happy birthday Jeff. Hope you liked your cake.

Joebama: The college years

This whole post (and shoot) was inspired by this photoshoot of pres. Obama while he was in college.

My housemate Joe was dressing up as Obama in his college years for a pre-halloween party and we were entertaining the idea of doing a similar shoot for a while now. So the day of his party we set a simple lighting scheme; with strong harsh light from two sources into the wall behind him (that would also bounce off the ceiling) and one low power fill light (normal light in the living room).

I tried shooting it in film; Firstly, so I could emulate the grain in the original Obama shoot and secondly, so I could use my ever handy FD 50mm f/1.8 lens. This failed when my tripod mount broke in two. Seriously.
Nevertheless, we continued with my DSLR, handheld with the kit lens.

At first I tried keeping it really strict to the original Obama shoot; same pose, same lighting, same expressions etc (this being my first such shoot, I assumed it would be easy). This didnt work out well and while I was trying to figure out what to do, Joe picked up his computer to change music or something. At that point I took this shot:



It was then that we realised that we I was going about this whole shoot completely wrong. I mean it would be impossible duplicate an impromptu photohoot from the 80's, however hard we try. SO we kinda just winged it and tried to keep things simple, in theme and spirit to the original shoot. Im pretty happy with how everything turned out.

In the original obama shoot, you can see him happily puffing away at his cig, and we wanted to do that. But, for some reason, I didnt let Joe light this one. I really dont know why.It looks lame if its not lit, I know.

Bands. Also, how to creep on people with a camera

Pictures from a couple of weeks ago where my housemate and a couple of friends had a little electronic jam session. I totally creeped on them with my (then) brand new adapter and 80-200mm canon FD lens. At that focal length and at that light i was shooting 1600(max) iso and shooting completely dark pictures in RAW (because shooting at any lower a shutter speed would just come out blurry). So i just popped the pics on lightroom and bumped up the exposure as much as i could. Im actually pretty impressed with the results; they're mad grainy I know but I kinda like that it looks pretty intense.

72 Hours of G20

The above video was shot by my roommate Joe. He was transcribing(?) his experiences of the G20 on his phone, and when that died on a notebook, and then later on his iPod.. He's written it all up on wonderful blog post that I recommend you read, its very interesting and gives you a great insight into some of the events.
