Brutal CMU

These pictures are from the depth of an extremely brutalist CMU building known as Wean hall. It really celebrates raw studded concrete like this building and also this building.

Brutalist architecture is strangely appealing to me; in a dystopian, 'Ministry of Truth' kind of way. I do have a strange fetish for angular geometry and modernist architecture, though.

Please sound off in the comments if i'm getting my architectural styles wrong; Somehow, im not too confident in my ability to separate certain aspects of Modernism, Post-Modernism, international style etc.

Oh, so pictures..

Fall is my favourite season by far. The colors, the cooler weather and im not allergic to everything all the time. So much to love, right?
Donnington Donegal is glorious during the fall and I spent a whole day walking around on the fields, making fires, boating and eating vast amounts of food donated by the wonderful Witter family. They also had a pear tree! im not too fussed about pears but these were fantastic! so crispy and flavourful, and not a sticker with 'imported from jamaica' in sight!! Its so weird how I took eating fresh fruits for granted in SL that the whole act of plucking a pear from a tree and eating it is liberating!

I really have to thank my friend Grace for driving us out there and showing us such a good time! She's a fantastic cook to boot.
Here are a few landscapes; I have others to process and a film roll to get too. So moar picturez soonz plz?

p.s can you tell that im really liking that medium format?

Migration

Migration

The picture above is from last fall, in park in Lancaster PA. I think its that time of the season when birds start to migrate. Funny enough, while I was at a friends' holiday home in Donegal PA this weekend (more pictures coming) I saw a bunch of these buggers flying to where ever they fly to during this time.

I think these are Geese. Can you eat Geese? I feel like the bigger the bird gets, the less tasty it is (like turkey, yuk).

A storm is brewing

The wild things

Was beautiful. I get why some people didnt like it, and I know of a lot of people going in expecting something else. The script was sparse but every single scene was ripe with raw emotion. I loved it.
And the soundtrack was absolutely brilliant.
Oh, Karen O.

Obey

The Warhol is having an exhibit of Shepard Fairey's work from the last decade or so starting tonight, October 16th. Fairey, if you didnt know, was the guy who made the iconic red, white and blue Obama poster.

This picture is from some of the 'street art' he did around Pittsburgh.

On a side note, i found this fantastic interview of the infamous (also genius) graffiti artist, Banksy, by none other than Fairey himself.

Im going to try to get to the warhol on saturday, hopefully they'll let me take pictures.

simple and easy.

Rosemary Fail

1
To start out I stuffed the boneless ribs with cloves of garlic then laid it in an oven pan with olive oil. Add some rosemary and kosher(rock) salt.

2
Cooking in the oven at 300-350f ish, took it out to check done-ness

3
Done, done done! cooked through just enough, out of the oven. I couldnt take the usual top down picture here because the lens would keep fogging up

4
things start going down hill around about now..

What shouldave been a spectacular meal is now just a decent meal

Something that should be known about the type of food I cook about me is that I like things fast, that is im a lazy bastard. When I cook anything, I usually spend more time on prep than I actually do cooking it. A usual meal involves adding a variety of ingredients (read: variety of meat) into a blazing hot wok and adding rice, spice and soy sauce. Now, this is all (very) well, but when you need a little variety in life and decide to dream up your own rosemary pork recipe, you need to have some patience and see the damn meal through.

Also, sometimes Asians are better off making Asian food than making European food.

If you read the descriptions to the pictures above you'd probably notice that everything goes well to the point where the pork comes out of the oven. Cooked through just right, and still moist, this was a gastronomical orgasm waiting to happen.
So i slice the pork into sizeable chunks and start pan searing them. OK good. Then I start adding the fat and olive oil into the pan so I can a little sauce going. OK maybe a decent idea, but the sauce could’ve used some different flavors like wine (didn’t have any)or at least some chili flakes. Then I decide I should have this with some brown pasta, MISTAKE. Firstly I didn’t have that much sauce for it to work with pasta, and second I AM NOT THAT CRAZY ABOUT PASTA.
So to save the situation, I add some cherry tomatoes and then deglaze the pan with gin (have loads) and butter to try to make a sauce out of it. In the end the pork was OK but a little dry and the pasta was a little less than decent because I didn’t boil all the alcohol off the gin. What a damn shame.

If i were a little more patient I could have made a
1) Nice sauce for the pasta
2) Made some rice and fry up the pork with some onions and veggies to make a nice stir fry.
3) Made some sort of side dish like mash or salad to eat the pork with.

I have ways to go it seems.
Oh I tried making stew in a crock pot a week ago. It turned out to be more like a soup.

WTF NEW YORK

Staten_islandexpired03_1

I shot these few pictures in Staten Island and then i left the camera lying around for about a month before i finally finished the reel. So im thinking a small light leak on the camera just continuously exposed the photographs giving them this really weird yellowed effect. I personally like it.

Bands. Also, how to creep on people with a camera

Joe_stayles

Pictures from a couple of weeks ago where my housemate and a couple of friends had a little electronic jam session. I totally creeped on them with my (then) brand new adapter and 80-200mm canon FD lens. At that focal length and at that light i was shooting 1600(max) iso and shooting completely dark pictures in RAW (because shooting at any lower a shutter speed would just come out blurry). So i just popped the pics on lightroom and bumped up the exposure as much as i could. Im actually pretty impressed with the results; they're mad grainy I know but I kinda like that it looks pretty intense.

Pictures from the G20. I was only there for one day of it, I was in philly for the weekend. What I saw was benign enough, with a little teargas action and seeing the whole city in complete lock down was not TOO bad. After I left things had got a little out of hand and if you can get a pretty good idea of it on Joe's blog. What really worried me though was the police themselves. There were riot police everywhere and alot of innocent people got arrested during the mass confusion in Oakland, and I couldnt help but feel like the police got a bit out of hand and really abused their awfully absolute power.

I keep thinking back to this Zimbardo psychology experiment.

I cant help but think that with riot gear, gas masks covering their faces and batons, the police just went on a complete power trip. Exercising their control in the sickest way possible; really, shooting a kid in the face with a pellet gun doesnt make you a man. Some photographers were forced to delete some of their pictures, some were even arrested.
